EARLY B — THE DOCTOR WHO DIAGNOSED DANCEHALLÂ
EARLY B
Earlando Arrington Neil, better known as Early B, remains one of the most electrifying voices to ever touch a microphone. Known across Jamaica as The Doctor, he brought a unique blend of humour, rapid fire delivery and razor sharp observation that helped define the sound of 1980s dancehall. His life was cut tragically short on 11th September 1994, but his influence continues to pulse through every foundation dancehall session.
The Sound System Surgeon
Early B came up through the sound system circuit, sharpening his craft in the most demanding arena: live dancehall. Killamanjaro, one of Jamaica’s most feared sounds, became his operating theatre. With a microphone in hand, Early B dissected riddims, diagnosed social issues and prescribed pure entertainment.
His style was unmistakable: playful, conversational and educational, able to flip into a rapid fire delivery without warning. He wasn’t just chatting; he was performing, storytelling, teaching and provoking laughter.
A Lyrical Innovator Ahead of His Time
- Early B’s lyrical approach set him apart from his peers. He had a gift for:
- Humour and satire, turning everyday Jamaican life into clever punchlines
- Social commentary, addressing politics, crime and culture with wit
- Storytelling, painting vivid scenes with rhythm and precision
Dancehall science, his doctor persona became a creative engine for his writing Tracks like Wheely Wheely, Send In The Patient, History of Jamaica, Gateman Get Fraid, Visit of Selassie, Learn Fe Drive, Bible Story, Circle Jamaica, Sunday Dish, Pedestrian and many more show how he balanced entertainment with intelligence. He made people laugh but he also made them think. He helped shape the transition from toasting to DJing, evolving into the sharper, more rhythmic style that would dominate the late 80s and 90s.
Remembering Early B is remembering the roots of dancehall itself. He was a performer who understood the crowd, a writer who understood the culture and a voice that still commands respect decades later.
His passing in Boston in 1994 shocked the reggae world, yet his music continues to circulate through new fans, sound systems, collectors and the memories of those who witnessed his genius live.
Early B didn’t just chat on riddims; he diagnosed the dancehall and his prescriptions still work today.
